Let’s hear it for the dads. We got a lot of buzz from our Mother’s Day “moms group” study, so today we’re announcing our list of the most active and influential dad-related groups. This year’s list focuses on groups involved with one of the most traditional Father’s Day activities - the backyard barbecue. The Top 10 list ranks BBQ groups who are among the most engaged within their socio-demographic target and who have the greatest potential to influence buying decisions.
Based on our proprietary Groupability Index, influence ratings take into account Groupable’s sponsorship activity data as well as activity from a variety of social media data points including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Klout Score, blogs, and podcasts. The index rating is calculated based upon aggregate scores in the following categories: authenticity, engagement and relevance.
Barbecues and dads go hand-in-hand on Father’s Day. The barbecue is one of the oldest cooking methods known to man. It’s a primal, social and unifying experience, and it smells good, too. Dads who are part of these groups are passionate and influential about the art and enjoyment of this activity. These are the types of groups brands like to reach. Brands can use Groupable’s ratings as a filter to find groups that will be both responsive to marketing initiatives as well as influential in spreading the word of these brand experiences.
Each night at the Al Hirschfeld theater, the audience attending the Broadway revival of Hair the audience is invited up on stage to dance the last song (Let the Sunshine In). You probably knew that. Here’s the REALLY cool part. The dance is filmed and posted online the same night. Audience members can tag themselves and share the video on Facebook or through other social media.
Become part of the performance instead of just an attendee.
Now, YOU’re the star - and when you’re a star, you tell lots of people. There are 7 performances each week. That’s a lot of buzz marketing, 1282 people x 7 = 8,274 potential influencerssending their friends to check it out.
Thanks to our friends at Mashable, we had our best 24hr. group sign-up period. As of this morning at 9am, we had 112 new groups sign up since Thursday. That nearly doubles our best previous one day total. The groups range from awesome non-profits to cheerleading groups to blogging moms. When we originally imagined bringing sponsorship to the masses, this was part of the dream. Even MORE exciting, were the number of sponsors that signed up, eager to find passionate groups to sponsor and help use their influence to spread their message.
As of April 16, 2009, there were approximately 12,900 videos found on You Tube under the search phrase “sponsor us.”
Many of these are non-profit causes urging donations. Some are legitimate extreme athletes, skateboarding, bmx, etc., while an awfully disproportionate number are kids looking for sponsors of their “finger-boarding” teams. Not to be believed, mini skateboards called Tech Decks are “ridden” with fingers, moving the board back and forth, flipping it with - fingers. Hey, we at Groupable think that virtually any activity is sponsorable - even the annual hot-dog eating contest at Coney Island…but take a look at this video and watch the sheer athleticism required to perform these tricks. Sponsors, we’re calling you all to get involved in this burgeoning “sport.”
There are a few sites that stand out in the non-profit, micro-loan or micro-sponsorship arena. The most widely known of these, kiva.org, has run out of projects to fund. How crazy (and amazing) is that? $53m to fund or sponsor entrepreneurs around the world - like Samira Ghulam Ali from Afghanistan, who used the $175 she raised to buy beads and other supplies to make and sell dolls. She has since repaid every penny.

The core mission of what we do here at Groupable is to assist groups of any type, hobby, professional or non-profit to announce or broadcast to the world why their worthy and how the equation can make sense to the sponsor. It’s kind of like CauseCast.org for self-organized entities pursuing a passion, a goal or a dream.
